Last November, an encroachment drive was carried out in Karachi by the KDA authorities under which multiple illegal marriage lawns were razed to the ground. Although the authorities took a step in the right direction, residents were most affected by this drive. Since the fourth quarter of a year is a peak wedding season, a majority of marriage lawns that were razed were booked. Most lawns ask for a hefty advance at the time of a booking.
After lawns were demolished, many people found themselves in a difficult position: they had a wedding to host, but didn’t have a venue. Some lawn owners paid the advance back to customers. However, a majority didn’t follow suit. Even after the lapse of two months, the people have not received their money. The authorities should take action against those lawn owners who had not returned the hard-earned money of the people. The entire campaign would be successful, if its negative effects are not trickled down to innocent people.
