In search of a job

July 23, 2018 0
In search of a job
The rise of unemployment has created a lot of problems for students. The 16 years of education in the engineering field is of no value in Pakistan as most of engineers are jobless. The government has not taken this matter seriously.Government-owned institutions hire foreign engineers for development projects. Engineers are the asset of a country and contribute a lot towards its growth and prosperity. It is the responsibility of the government to give them respect and create job opportunities for them.Farooque AdilKarachi

Safety comes first

July 22, 2018 0
Safety comes first
That nine shops were robbed in Saddar, Karachi highlights the rising number of crimes in the city. The incident took place on Wednesday (July 18) and according to some media reports, at least Rs860,000 in cash was stolen from the property. It was, however, shocking to learn that the market – which is among the city’s biggest markets – had no CCTV cameras installed in shops. The authorities considered should ensure proper security arrangements so that such incidents are averted in the future.S Baloch ( Kech )

Time to do more

Time to do more
The Mastung massacre and the attack on Akram Durrani expose loopholes in our security arrangements and the extent to which the terrorists have penetrated into our country. Similarly, the attack on Haroon Bilour highlights the fact that terrorism is deeply entrenched in our country. The recent series of attacks requires concerted efforts on part of both federal and provincial governments which should work in coordination to eliminate the menace of terrorism from Pakistani soil.Malik Tariq Ali ( Lahore )

Perks and privileges

July 22, 2018 0
Perks and privileges
Ours is a country where there is no rule of law in place. For example, officers in different public sector organisations, who are entitled for the ‘pick and drop off’ facility misuse their official vehicles – by using the vehicle for personal trips – and cause a lot of fiscal loss to the national exchequer. Some of these officers even send their secretaries to pick their children from educational institutions. This practice of sending the secretaries – who are government employees – instead of personal drivers has a negative effect on office work. As per rules, official vehicles should be parked on the offices’ premises after the working hours, but in this country people have no regard to rule of law. If we want to see Pakistan on the path to progress, these practices should be discouraged.Hashim Abro ( Islamabad )

Living in fear

Living in fear
The recent wave of terrorism in the country calls for urgent measures by security agencies to put an end to terror attacks. The Mastung attack that took place last week resulted in the death of at least 149 people. The authorities concerned have to take even stricter action to ensure that all elements that are responsible for tampering with the country’s peace are handled with an iron fist. There shouldn’t be any leniency for the groups that are spreading violence in the country. It is hoped that the authorities will be successful in getting rid of hateful elements.Waqar Zia ( Lahore )

Broken roads

Broken roads
Despite being Pakistan’s biggest city, Karachi has a poor level of infrastructure. Broken roads at almost all parts of the city have become a sign of incompetence of the previous government which did nothing to begin repair work in the city.Almost all roads have potholes which made it difficult for commuters to have a smooth ride. The higher authorities must look into the matter and start repair and maintenance work at the earliest.Kashan Fazal ( Karachi )

Unsafe milk

July 22, 2018 0
Unsafe milk
That many profiteers add water in loose milk is, unfortunately, quite common in Pakistan. Being a concerned mother, I am afraid to even go to these shops knowing what kind of products they have been selling to the people. It was said that packaged milk posed a serious health risk, but I think otherwise. Packaged milk brands have been upfront and transparent in revealing how their milk is sourced and processed. I see no reason to doubt them.I am of the opinion that we should use packaged milk to keep ourselves healthy and safe from the hazards that loose milk poses. In addition, I will also laud the Punjab Food Authority for banning the sale of loose milk. I felt a relief that somebody is taking an initiative for the safety of people.Sumaiya Shafi ( Karachi )

Sane choices

Sane choices
Election campaigns are in full swing. Political leaders are promising for things we all know they wouldn’t deliver. Unfortunately, many people still vote for the same faces and do not consider their past performances. As a result, the same people who failed to deliver on their promises get elected again. People should vote for only those candidates who have actually worked in the past.Naveed Ahmed ( Naudero )

Alternatives to cruelty

July 22, 2018 0
Alternatives to cruelty
After every six months, culling campaign is launched to bring down the number of stray dogs. Homeless dogs are either poisoned or shot dead. While the authorities consider it to be the easiest way of controlling the population of stray dog, this is one of the cruellest method which should be condemned by all. There are so many alternatives to this cruelty. Stray dogs that roam the streets of residential areas should be vaccinated and neutered. The authorities should also establish shelter home for stray animals so that these voiceless creatures can live in peace. The authorities concerned should adopt alternative methods to control stray population.Muhammad Bakhtiyar ( Kech )

EOBI pensioners

July 22, 2018 0
EOBI pensioners
This refers to the letter ‘Meagre pension’ (July 20) by Syed Hussein El-Edroos. I fully endorse the writer’s views regarding the plight of EOBI pensioners. The EOBI pension case has been pending in the Supreme Court for over a year. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of senior citizens have been suffering and finding it difficult to make ends meet. The higher authorities should hear the case on priority on a humanitarian basis and ensure that justice is served to pensioners.Ahmad Nawaz ( Islamabad )

If brutality had a face

July 21, 2018 0
If brutality had a face
A few days ago, a baby donkey was left to die on streets of Karachi after being brutally beaten. The helpless animal had the name ‘Nawaz’ spray painted on his body, which shows that the animal was abused by opponents of Nawaz Sharif – the three-time prime minister of Pakistan. It really pained me to read about this incident. Have we lost humanity? What good can come out of abusing an animal? That a group of people will beat a donkey brutally and able to escape the law is something what we can easily expect to happen in Pakistan. We were lucky to find the poor animal, but how can we be sure that all other animals are safe? In the absence of strict animal protection laws, the incident like this will continue to happen. It’s time the higher authorities took strict action against those who abuse animal.Hajra ZaidiKarachi

An emotional nation

July 21, 2018 0
An emotional nation
This refers to the article ‘No cause for celebrations’ ( July 19) by Nighat Kamal Aziz. The writer has eloquently explained why there should not be any cause for celebrations till our political leadership choose their members on the basis of merit. We, Pakistanis, are emotional people and our political forces know how to exploit these emotions to achieve their vested interests. All leading political parties have their paid contents appearing in the print and electronic media highlighting their own achievements and ridiculing their opponents’ failures, irrespective of the fact that their opponents may have completed a number of development projects.Keeping in view our national psyche for celebrations without any plausible cause to do so, we shall probably need another 70 years to get mature enough to appreciate all the good actions that have been taken by others and not negate or belittle opponents just because of our party affiliations.Group captain (r) Saeed Nawaz KhanRawalpindi

A surge in urea prices

July 21, 2018 0
A surge in urea prices
This is to clear the controversy that was sparked after the news relating to the surge in urea prices surfaced. In 2016, the government reduced urea price from Rs1,790 and capped it at Rs1,400 per bag. A voluntary reduction of Rs50 by manufactures, the reduction of Rs184 as the impact of GST reduction from 17 percent to five percent, and a subsidy of Rs156 per bag brought down the price by Rs390 per bag. Through the Finance Bill 2017-18, the government revised the subsidy scheme and reduced the subsidy to Rs100 per bag, while keeping the price at Rs1,400, implying that manufacturers would bear a further burden of Rs56 per bag with the total contribution of Rs106 per bag. Recently, the reduction of GST on urea from five percent to two percent and a withdrawal of the subsidy led to a price surge by Rs52 per bag. Keeping in mind the impact of inflation and rupee devaluation, urea prices were bound to rise. It should be noted that the price of urea in the international market is somewhere around Rs2,300 per bag. In light of these calculations, it is clear that the news of price increase is exaggerated.Syed Natiq Ali NaqviLahore

No accusations

No accusations
Election campaigns for the 2018 elections are in full swing. All candidates are arranging public gatherings and trying to attract maximum number of people to their gatherings. It is essential for politicians to understand the fact that people present at such events hold diverse opinion and are not necessarily registered in that constituency. But, politicians are impressed by the turn out and boast about the number of people present at their events. On the day of polling, people cast their vote for whoever they deem fit and appropriate. In the event of losing the elections, the candidates, who were earlier taking pride in public turnout, resort to accusing opponents of rigging the elections. It will be appreciated if our seasoned politicians, in the event of defeat, accept the results and utilise the time spent out of the assembly to ponder on their mistakes, and refrain from creating havoc.Raja ShafaatUllahIslamabad

Without power
This is to draw the attention of the Wapda authorities to the suffering of residents of Iqbal Town, Rawalpindi. Despite regular complaints, a defective transformer in the neighbourhood has not been replaced so far. As a result, residents have to put up with prolonged power outages. The authorities concerned should have a look into the matter and ensure that the faulty transformer is repaired at the earliest.Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan AdowaliyaRawalpindi

This is our home

This is our home
Residents of the Martin and Clayton colonies, Jahangir Road, FC Area, Old Lalukhet, Patel Para and other localities were shocked when the government announced to vacate their houses. Many families have been living in these colonies for the past 70 years. Previously, the government announced that it will grant ownership rights to occupants. However, now the authorities have refused to do so.The estate office’s claims that residents are not paying their dues are untrue. Our bills are cleared and dues are paid. We built our house by ourselves and the estate office didn’t do anything. The higher authorities must look into this matter and give residents the opportunity of being heard.Sania SabaKarachi

Tackling climate change

July 21, 2018 0
Tackling climate change
To combat climate change, we have to take serious measures to reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix. Another step is to initiate forestation and tree plantation programmes and impose a huge penalty on cutting trees and on deforestation.By launching a massive public transport scheme in all cities and curbing down individual transport usage – that has negative impact on the environment – we will be able to manage climate change issues of our country in an effective manner.Aleem AhmedIslamabad

Mind your language

July 21, 2018 0
Mind your language
The use of indecent language in the ongoing elections campaigns has disappointed a large number of people. Hurling baseless accusations at each other has, unfortunately, become a norm in our country. Such tactics don’t only damage the reputation of an individual, but it also has a negative effect on the credibility of the person who chooses to resort to abusive language to belittle his or her opponent. The practice of tarnishing someone else’s image should be discouraged. It is important to ensure that our freedom of expression does not lead to damaging someone’s reputation.Mushahid NaqviMuzaffarabad

Vote for Pakistan

July 21, 2018 0
Vote for Pakistan
A large number of people in our country believe that there is absolutely no reason to go out and cast vote. According to them, there is not a single leader who is capable of leading Pakistan to progress and prosperity. But, it is essential that people understand that now is the time to take a step. We have to vote for the unity of this nation. It is true that Pakistan has been suffering from several problems for many years now.It has an acute shortage of water, doesn’t have good education system and lacks proper healthcare centres. In addition, the rupee fall has hit the economy hard. Even after knowing about all the problems that we are facing, if we still refuse to vote we would sadly be allowing our country to regress more. We have to realise the significance of our vote.Ayesha FarhanKarachi
