The shocking discovery that a vast majority of people in Punjab and Sindh drink arsenic-laced water should have made the authorities to work day and night to tackle the issue. However, no step has been taken so far to address this crisis. While people living in the urban areas of both provinces can buy water tanker and meet their needs, the poverty-stricken people in rural areas do not have any alternative.
As a result, they use contaminated water for drinking and other domestic purposes. According to a Unicef report, more than 50,000 people, including children, die every year due to water-borne diseases. This is a serious and dangerous issue and must be tackled urgently. That the unavailability of safe drinking water will be the reason behind a staggering number of deaths is worrisome. The government should look into the matter and take remedial measures to provide clean drinking water to the people.
