Defamation case: Court gives Imran?s counsel last chance to appear

LAHORE: An additional district and sessions court on Friday gave last chance to PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s counsel Babar Awan to appear in court in a defamation suit filed by Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif against Imran. Babar Awan has been a constant no-show since the defamation case was filed in July last year.

The hearing of the case was adjourned until February 16. The chief minister had moved a defamation suit of Rs10 billion against PTI chief Imran Khan for allegedly offering him (Imran) bribe to

withdraw Panama papers’ case on December 19. Shahbaz had filed an application seeking an early verdict in his Rs10 billion defamation suit against the PTI chief. The chief minister’s counsel Mustafa Ramday had argued that Imran levelled false allegations of bribery against his client Mian Shahbaz Sharif. He said Imran in April through media stated that a common friend offered him Rs10 billion on behalf of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to remain silent on Panama papers case. The counsel said it was a serious allegation levelled by Imran against his client which badly damaged his repute. He said the allegation also caused mental agony and stress to his client. The counsel prayed the court to issue decree for recovery of Rs10 billion as compensation for publication of defamatory content in his favour.

Earlier, the chief minister through a legal notice had urged Imran to name the person within 14 days who reached him on his behalf with offer of Rs10 billion for Panama papers case. He said otherwise, the court would be moved against him. Later, a defamation suit was filed by the chief minister against the PTI chairman.
